Food Plotting for the End of July

We were out planting food plots for a client tonight, and what can we say— there’s nothing better than the feeling that you’re securing food for your deer herd that they can enjoy in the dead of winter. When some people think about planting food plots and crops, they only consider having the food growing in the summer. But actually, we’ve found that giving deer food in the summer is kind of a useless task. We’re surrounded by cropland. Let them eat over there! If you’re trying to attract big bucks for hunting season, summer food isn’t necessarily the best way to achieve that.

Brassicas and Soybeans

“Brassicas” are basically turnips and other turnip-like veggies. They grow underground, and the deer love to dig them up and eat them, even in the snow. They’ll also eat the leaves, which makes brassicas a really good choice if you are planting deer food for the fall and winter on your land.

We’re also mixing in some soybeans, because they have a ton of protein, and again, deer love them. We planted our own food plots a few weeks ago, and they’re coming up like wildfire right now! (Rain will do that. :) )

So again, if you’re starting a food plot on a minimum budget in July —- Go with the Brassicas!!
